The Hidden Addiction
Tiny Little Secrets
She could be your neighbor, your sister, your co-worker or your best friend and she is addicted to prescription drugs. It started easily enough with a surgery, an injury, perhaps even a dental procedure that causes pain. A doctor gave her a prescription for pain relief. She didn’t use the drugs to get high; she just needed pain relief. But painkillers can be highly addictive. They bind to receptors in the brain to decrease the perception of pain, create a feeling of euphoria and ultimately, if abused, cause physical dependence. It happens easily; a woman might receive extra amounts of a medication when a physician overprescribes it based upon her description of her pain levels or she may “doctor shop” in order to receive more prescriptions. Growing Old at Home
Growing Old at Home
Many of us are helping elderly parents with the issues of aging. One of the most difficult challenges of growing older is the desire of most of us to remain in our own homes for as long as possible. That desire is called “aging in place.” According to a poll conducted by AARP in November, 2010, 75 percent of people hope to stay in their homes as they age. Fewer than 5 percent of Americans 65 and older reside in a long term care facility. However, more seniors than ever are looking at alternative living arrangements as they age. What My Mother Told Me
What My Mother Told Me
Things My Mother Told Me
Those are those words burned into your brain. The things you heard your mother say to you many times. Sometimes funny; sometimes inspirational; sometimes irritating but always with love. In honor of Mother's Day we asked a few of our readers to share the words they remember their moms repeating to them. Do these remind you of things your mother told you? Please share the things your mother always told you with us on our After40 Facebook page.
Cheri Daniels, First Lady of Indiana - My mother, Mary Lou, always told me to "Be careful what you wish for".
Jennie DeVoe, Indianapolis, singer/songwriter - My Mom told me it was a shock to her system having me after my sister had been the easiest child in the world to raise. From my personality to my friends to my hair, everything seemed to be a chore. It may sound sad but I noticed that I was a lot of work to her. However, we had a memorable moment a few years back that lifted the veil on all of my growing years with my Mom. One day my Mom simply said to me "I wish I had appreciated you more while you were growing up". I guess what I love about my Mom most is that she never tried too hard to change me, she always tried her hardest to understand me. At this point in our lives, I love most of all that neither of us are disappointed in the other one. We entertain each other and just accept and love one another. For that I am forever grateful. I love my Mom."
